Description
San Diego State University (SDSU) developed a faculty-focused micro-credential in 2023 and launched it in spring 2024 to build generative-AI literacy and ethical readiness among higher-education instructors. It is self-paced and modular, grounded in experiential learning, covering how GenAI works, ethical considerations, instructional applications, tool selection and prompt-engineering practice; participants produce artefacts such as syllabus statements on AI use. Results are reported in the Journal of Information Systems Education (vol. 37, no. 2, Spring 2026). 374 faculty began the programme and 145 completed the post-test and received the badge (roughly 39% completion); 98% of respondents recommended the course to colleagues. Pretest-posttest surveys show statistically significant gains in GenAI use and self-efficacy, and module-level evaluations found the content informative, appropriately paced and supportive of meaningful learning. Caveats: the evidence is self-reported faculty survey data from completers only; the published abstract and university release give no effect sizes and no student learning outcomes, and attrition (about 61% of starters did not complete the post-test) may bias results. Participants kept stressing verification of AI output and ethical risks, which suggests confidence gains did not displace caution.
