A Gibraltar charity trains residents as Microsoft-certified IT technicians via a free four-month course with guaranteed work placement, funded by a Kusuma Trust grant and rent-free premises; its first cohort of 13 graduated in 2023 with a 100% pass rate.
The Academy was created to address a documented shortage of local technical talent in Gibraltar, with local businesses struggling to fill vacancies ranging from helpdesk to cybersecurity roles.
The Gibraltar Digital Skills Foundation opened the Academy in October 2021, with premises donated rent-free for three years by Europort and all profits reinvested into the Foundation. Its flagship course, funded by a GBP 23,500 Kusuma Trust grant, is a four-month Microsoft Systems Administrator and Help Desk programme culminating in five Microsoft certifications and a mandatory work placement, with the curriculum designed in consultation with Gibraltar's gaming sector and vocational partnerships with local employers Comtact (cybersecurity) and Bland Group (Python and JavaScript). The Academy has since expanded into supplementary coding courses for young people, cybersecurity training, and digital skills courses for older adults.
The first cohort of 13 participants started in January 2023 and achieved a 100% pass rate.
