FEMINNO is a Yerevan-based nonprofit founded by Seda Papoyan in 2022 to promote women's participation in male-dominated fields; its flagship annual conference has drawn 30+ international speakers from countries including Canada, Italy, Spain, Nigeria and the United States. In March 2024 the U.S.-based Henry Luce Foundation awarded FEMINNO's parent entity, Thrive Armenia Foundation, a $100,000 grant under its STEM Convergence program.
In July 2026 FEMINNO launched the Global Armenian AI Girls Award, a free three-stage online AI competition open to Armenian girls aged 13 to 19 anywhere in the world, including the diaspora. No prior AI, technical or programming experience is required. The competition runs from July through November 2026; finalists in the fully-online final stage receive mentorship from AI professionals, and prizes include cash awards, special recognitions and an international trip.
The award responds to a documented gender gap in Armenia's tech sector, which Armenian outlets such as EVN Report have covered, and is framed by FEMINNO as building "a generation of Armenian girls who will shape the technologies of tomorrow, not simply use them."
As a first-edition competition launched in mid-2026, no completion or learning-outcome data exists yet. The evidence available concerns the organization's funding, track record and program design rather than measured impact on participants' AI skills.
