Description

Trinidad and Tobago's economy has historically depended on oil and gas, leaving it exposed to commodity-price swings. In April 2025, the government restructured its investment-promotion landscape, merging InvesTT (the former lead investment agency) with the country's export- and creative-industry-promotion agencies into a single body, Global Trinidad and Tobago, under the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism.
The Ministry's own 'Diversification in Action - Year One Report' (presented May 2026) reports an investment pipeline of US$1.44 billion across 47 projects - 61% foreign and 39% local direct investment - with eight committed projects worth US$597 million. It also lists a state-asset strategy that shortlisted 15 priority sites from more than 100 underutilised state assets for private investment.
On trade, non-energy exports reached US$848.4 million in the first half of 2025 against a national target of an additional US$2 billion by 2027, with over 300 products across 18 sectors earmarked for tariff and market-access support; the report also projects a doubling of tourism's GDP share from 6% to 12% by 2030.
These are agency-reported pipeline and target figures rather than independently audited realised outcomes - the 5,600-plus jobs tied to the investment pipeline, for instance, are described as 'potential' rather than confirmed hires, and the merged agency itself is under one year old. The US State Department's 2024 Investment Climate Statement corroborates the broader diversification push and Trinidad and Tobago's continued reliance on the energy sector, underscoring why independent verification of the new agency's results will matter over the coming years.
