On 11 September 2019, the Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration signed an agreement with Samsung India to develop a 71,000 m² Miyawaki-method forest in Greater Noida, planting roughly 200,000 native saplings under Samsung's corporate social responsibility programme; Samsung committed to fund maintenance for 10 years. Officials described it as potentially the country's largest Miyawaki forest at the time, part of a wider district goal to raise Gautam Buddh Nagar's forest cover from about 1.5% toward India's 33% target, including a plan to convert 250 acres to forest.
The district had already tested the method on a smaller, 3,500 m² plot at its Collectorate compound, reporting "satisfactory" growth before committing to the larger site. Elsewhere in India, comparable Miyawaki plantings offer supporting evidence for the technique: a 750 m² plot at Barapullah, Delhi (2,278 trees across 44 native species, planted under the government's LOTUS drain-treatment programme) showed strong early growth, and published field studies on Miyawaki stands in south India (including sites linked to the NGO SayTrees in Bengaluru) have measured real biomass and carbon accumulation in early-stage growth, with reported height-growth roughly 30% faster than conventional afforestation in some comparisons.
Evidence should be read with real caveats: Citizen Matters' 2022 reporting on the wider Miyawaki movement in Indian cities notes costs of roughly ₹50,000–60,000 per 100 m² (pushed higher still by sapling supply-chain pressures), unresolved questions about long-term survival beyond the first few years, and ecologists warning that dense single-technique planting cannot substitute for protecting existing native forest. No site-specific survival-rate or carbon-sequestration data for the Greater Noida plot itself were found in the sources reviewed.
