Context

Greece has some of the most severe wildfire seasons in Europe, and conventional weather satellites typically detect fires only once they are already comparable in size to large ships, by which point they are hard to contain. In 2024 the Greek government contracted German nanosatellite company OroraTech to build a dedicated national wildfire-detection satellite constellation, with funding drawn from EU sources including the Recovery and Resilience Facility; reported costs range from roughly EUR 20 million for an initial phase to a full network cost cited at EUR 200 million.

Activities

Four OroraTech nanosatellites, each smaller than an airline carry-on bag, launched on 3 May 2026 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 mission, developed in cooperation with the European Space Agency. Their thermal sensors can flag heat signatures as small as 4 by 4 metres with hourly, gap-free coverage of Greek territory, and onboard AI models analyse the imagery to filter out false positives such as solar panels before alerting Greece's Fire Brigade and connected authorities.

Results

The programme is overseen by Greece's Ministry of Digital Governance in coordination with the Fire Brigade, with full national coverage targeted by the end of 2026. Greece and OroraTech describe it as the world's first satellite constellation dedicated specifically to firefighting, and the launch was covered by the European Space Agency, Euronews and CTIF, the International Association of Fire Services.

Conclusions

As of this writing the system had only just entered service, and no fire-season detection-accuracy, false-positive-rate, or response-time data has yet been published, so this is a well-funded, clearly governed capability whose real-world effectiveness is still to be demonstrated.
