Description

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) in Georgia launched a K-12 'AI Ready' pilot in 2019 in the Seckinger cluster, organised around an AI Learning Framework with six areas: data science, mathematical reasoning, creative problem solving, ethics, applied experiences and programming. Seckinger High School, opened in 2022, integrates AI across the curriculum and offers an AI career pathway; feeder elementary and middle schools follow the same framework. District staff say AI is embedded across subjects rather than offered only as an elective so that every pupil has access.
For 2024-25 GCPS updated its policies and published guidance on the ethical use of AI. In 2025 the district and ISTE's research team developed a 10–15 minute digital diagnostic for grades 9–12 covering 26 constructs with two items each. About 1,200 Seckinger students took two parallel pilot versions, split alphabetically into similar groups, with reliability and item-response analyses and removal of unusually fast responses.
Limits: the sources report no pupil scores, reliability coefficients or evidence that the approach improves AI readiness; the pilot comes from one school; and the EdSurge article describing it is sponsored by Intel. The practice is therefore valuable mainly as a documented, transferable design for embedding AI literacy and measuring it, pending published results.
