Context
In September 2026, Costa Rica's CCSS installed three AI-integrated Samsung ultrasound units at Hospital Dr. Rafael Angel Calderon Guardia in San Jose, at ~USD67,000 each, replacing seven end-of-life machines.
Results
The units provide AI-assisted detection/characterisation of breast, thyroid and liver lesions and quantify liver fat percentage, serving approximately 950 patients per month. CCSS separately partners with Roche on AI-assisted mammography aiming to raise breast-screening participation from 22% to 80%.
