Human-I-T – Refurbished Devices, Connectivity and Digital Skills for Underserved US Communities

Founded in Long Beach, California in 2012, Human-I-T set out to tackle two linked problems at once: the volume of still-usable electronics discarded as e-waste, and the number of low-income households without a computer or affordable home internet.
The nonprofit collects donated laptops, desktops and phones from businesses and individuals, wipes and refurbishes them to NAID AAA and ISO 9001/14001/45001-certified standards, then distributes them at low or no cost to students, seniors, job seekers and families, bundled with subsidised internet plans, digital-skills training and tech support.
Human-I-T's 2022 annual report states it refurbished and redistributed 82,400 electronics (including 18,000 computers given free to students, seniors and low-income families), diverted 3.4 million pounds of e-waste from landfill, connected 19,000 households to low-cost internet, and enrolled 3,100 people in digital-skills training that year, on roughly $20 million raised. The organisation explicitly labels these figures as internally generated and not yet independently audited; external validation is narrower but real, resting on third-party NAID AAA/ISO certifications for its refurbishment operations and inclusion in the independently produced 2025 EcoTech Report.
Operations have expanded from Long Beach into Detroit and a Los Angeles County device contract (3,500 devices in 2023, scaling toward roughly 14,000 beneficiaries by 2026), plus a first international pilot in Toronto with Visa in 2022. Because its core impact metrics are self-reported and unaudited, they should be read as the organisation's own account of scale rather than an independently verified outcome.
