Context

Ideon Science Park was founded in Lund, Sweden, with a groundbreaking in 1983 and official opening in 1984, through a collaboration between Lund University, the then Malmöhus county, Lund municipality and the regional business community, on former farmland east of the city.

Objectives

To provide a shared physical and institutional base where university research, regional government and industry could collaborate on technology commercialisation over the long term.

Activities

Ericsson was among the park's first occupants, opening its ERA mobile-telephone laboratory there in 1983 to develop technology working closely with Lund University's engineering faculty; Axis Communications and ABB were also among Ideon's original tenants. In 1989, Ericsson engineers Nils Rydbeck and Johan Ullman initiated the work at Ideon that became Bluetooth wireless technology.

Results

By 1988 the park already hosted around 100 companies, and it has since grown to roughly 245,000 m² across more than 17 buildings, forming the core of the Medicon Valley life-science cluster. More than 3,400 patents have been registered at Ideon since 1983. In 2019 it became the first UN-certified science park in the world.

Conclusions

Ideon shows how sustained university-region-municipality ownership over four decades, rather than a short-term programme, can host a technology whose commercial impact (Bluetooth is now built into billions of devices) is independently verifiable well beyond the park itself.
