Technopark Zürich is a privately funded foundation established in 1993 (built 1989-1993) on a 47,000 m² site in Zurich's Industriequartier, created to house researchers, startups and established companies alongside one another and to broker technology transfer between them. Its main sponsors are Swiss Life and Zürcher Kantonalbank, and it works with strategic partners including ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, the Canton of Zurich's economic development office, EMPA Dübendorf, ZHAW and the University of St. Gallen; a 2012 expansion followed a city council-approved zoning revision.
The park operates as a shared campus and matchmaking platform: around 260 high- and deep-tech companies, service providers, research institutes and university units currently occupy the site, together employing roughly 2,800 people. It sits at the centre of ETH Zurich's spin-off pipeline, which since 1973 has produced 545 spin-off and start-up companies — the most of any European university — supported by mechanisms such as the ETH Pioneer Fellowship (CHF 150,000 over 18 months, funding roughly a third of new spin-offs each year).
Independent reporting (Sifted) puts the combined value of ETH-linked spin-offs at roughly €15.7 billion, with a 93% five-year survival rate — well above the average Swiss startup — and 12 unicorns founded by ETH alumni, four of them direct university spin-offs. Notable Technopark tenants and ETH spin-offs include Sensirion (humidity sensors used in roughly two of every three cars sold globally), travel-tech unicorn GetYourGuide (which set up in Technopark in 2010), and carbon-capture company Climeworks.
Technopark Zürich is a long-running example of a city-embedded, privately governed science park that has sustained a high-survival spin-off pipeline for over three decades by combining shared physical space, a dense network of named institutional partners, and dedicated seed funding (the Pioneer Fellowship) rather than relying on public subsidy alone. Its main limitation as a transferable model is that the campus itself is capacity-bound at roughly 260-300 tenants on one site, so most of its growth shows up in the wider ETH spin-off count rather than in the park's own footprint.
