Africa's first tech hub, launched March 2010 in Nairobi by Erik Hersman (Omidyar Network/Hivos). Now a CcHUB subsidiary. 450+ startups trace origins here; portfolio raised $40M+ and generated 40,000+ jobs in East Africa.
iHub was established in March 2010 in Nairobi as Africa's first dedicated technology hub, founded by Erik Hersman (co-founder of Ushahidi) as a community-driven, open-access co-working and incubation space positioned between an NGO and a business model, aimed at catalyzing Kenya's and East Africa's startup ecosystem.
The hub aimed to democratize access to co-working space, mentorship, and technical resources for developers and entrepreneurs, helping catalyze a self-sustaining tech startup ecosystem in a developing-economy city.
iHub operated as an open-access co-working and incubation facility for developers and entrepreneurs, supported by early funding from Omidyar Network and Hivos; in 2019 it was acquired by Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB), backed by USAID and the Mastercard Foundation, integrating iHub into a pan-African network spanning Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda and Namibia, and it opened a new headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi in November 2024.
By the time of its 2019 acquisition, iHub reported a community of 16,000+ members, more than 450 startups tracing their origins to the hub, portfolio companies having raised over $40 million in capital, and an estimated 40,000+ jobs generated across East Africa — all self-reported, unaudited figures.
iHub is cited as a foundational, still-operating model for tech-hub-led ecosystem building in Africa, later folded into and scaled through the CcHUB pan-African network, though its quantitative claims remain self-reported and have not been independently verified.
