Context

Launched in July 2015 by Google India and Tata Trusts, Internet Saathi trains rural Indian women ('saathis') as digital-literacy trainers who teach other women basic internet skills village to village, targeting a stark gender gap where only 1.8% of India's internet users were rural women in 2015.

Results

By its mature scale, close to 60,000 saathis had been trained and reached more than 20 million women across over 200,000 villages; a SocialCops monitoring survey found 70% of women accessed the internet for the first time through the programme and 45% reported income-related benefits, though these figures come from the programme's own monitoring rather than a randomised evaluation.
