Opened in 2022 at Thimphu TechPark with MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms and the Bhutan Foundation, Bhutan's Super FabLab anchors a four-site national network offering fabrication tools and Fab Academy training, and has already produced a locally built medical device.
The Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck Super FabLab opened in June 2022 at Thimphu TechPark as a partnership between Druk Holding and Investments' InnoTech department, the Bhutan Foundation and MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms, with funding from the US State Department. The roughly 715 sqm facility anchors a national network of four fab labs in Thimphu, Paro, Gelephu and Lobeysa.
It runs Bhutan's chapter of Fab Academy, MIT's 13-week global digital-fabrication training curriculum, and in July 2023 hosted FAB23, the international annual conference of the worldwide fab lab community.
The lab reports more than 35 active collaborations, over 20 workshops and training programmes, and more than 80 local and international clients served since opening. Its most concrete documented output is a locally manufactured smart eye-camera device for early detection of eye disease, developed with Japan's Keio University and reported to have drawn commercial interest from US and Japanese partners.
Independent, audited figures on jobs created, businesses launched or revenue generated were not found in public sources — the evidence here is a credible but early-stage record for a four-year-old facility, not a mature impact evaluation.
