Context

Jordan's National Steering Committee for Pay Equity (NSCPE) was launched in July 2011 as a tripartite-plus body -- government, the Jordanian National Commission for Women, the Ministry of Labour, trade unions, employers' associations, civil society and media -- built on ILO technical cooperation begun in 2010.

Results

The Committee commissioned an ILO-supported study of the gender pay gap in Jordan's private education sector, finding women teachers earned 41.6% less than men. Related diagnostics cited by the ILO put the gap at roughly 28% in the public sector, 41.3% in manufacturing, 27.9% in health and social work, and 24.5% in education overall.

Conclusions

More than a decade on, the Committee has produced diagnosis, training and legislative-review recommendations, but Jordan has not enacted a binding equal-pay or pay-transparency law. The ILO's continued Equal Pay Day campaigns indicate the wage gaps identified in 2011-2013 have not been independently confirmed as closed.
