Kerala's KITE agency ran three-day AI-literacy workshops for 80,000 secondary-school teachers from May 2024 — covering prompt engineering, AI content creation, assessment design and deepfake/responsible-AI risks — after first training 180 master trainers; 16,500 teachers had comp
Kerala's Department of General Education runs one of India's most developed state-level school-technology programmes through its implementing agency, KITE (Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education), which had already equipped the state's public schools with IT infrastructure and digital classrooms before turning to generative AI.
From 2 May 2024, KITE began three-day, in-person AI-literacy training for 80,000 secondary-school teachers (Classes 8–12) statewide, delivered in batches of 25 teachers using their own laptops and phones, with G-Suite institutional accounts used specifically so teachers would not need personal credentials. The curriculum covers six areas: document/video summarisation, AI image generation for subject-specific visuals, prompt engineering and machine learning basics, data visualisation for presentations, AI-assisted assessment design, and a module on deepfakes and responsible AI use. KITE first trained 180 Master Trainers over one month, who then cascaded the course through district IT coordinators to classroom teachers; the state's General Education Minister described training 80,000 teachers simultaneously as among the largest efforts of its kind by a single state government worldwide, with completion targeted for August 2024.
By the opening weeks of the rollout, 16,500 of the targeted 80,000 teachers had completed the course, according to government and news reporting. These are self-reported programme-completion counts from the implementing agency, not an independent evaluation of classroom practice change or student learning outcomes, and no such downstream study has yet been published.
