Description

Kenya launched Konza Technopolis in 2008 as a flagship Vision 2030 project: a purpose-built "Silicon Savannah" technology city roughly 60 km southeast of Nairobi along the Mombasa highway, intended to diversify the economy through ICT, business-process outsourcing and knowledge industries.
Managed by the state Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA), the project reported real progress by 2025: Phase One horizontal infrastructure was over 90% complete, the Konza National Data Centre hosted 171 public- and private-sector tenants, cumulative investment reached KES 99.4 billion (up from KES 83.5 billion in 2024) across 78 registered investors, and in 2024 Kenya signed a $284.1 million financing agreement with South Korea to build a Digital Media City on the site.
Independent Kenyan business press (Business Daily Africa) reported that Konza's own revenue nonetheless fell 19.6% to KES 202.9 million in 2025 (from KES 252.4 million in 2024), driven by weak land-lease uptake in later development phases. The project has also faced fraud allegations tied to its original land acquisition, and a peer-reviewed case study documented disputes with local landowners over compensation and access. The government's own projection of 240,000 eventual jobs and a 2%-of-GDP contribution remain future targets, not realised outcomes.
Included as an instructive case of a state-anchored master-planned technology city: strong headline investment and infrastructure milestones can coexist with land disputes, revenue shortfalls and slow private uptake, underlining the governance safeguards such projects need to convert construction progress into inclusive economic outcomes.
