The EU LIFE for MIRES project (2018–2024, €5.85M) rewetted ~2,200 ha of bogs and fens across Czechia's Šumava and Germany's Bavarian Forest parks, blocking 212 km of drains and raising water tables, with ~125 t CO2/yr avoided and 165 ha of black-grouse habitat improved.
CZ03The EU-co-financed LIFE for MIRES project (August 2018-December 2024, total budget EUR 5,845,002) restored roughly 2,200 hectares of wetlands across 65 sites in Czechia's Šumava National Park and Germany's Bavarian Forest National Park, blocking around 212 km of drainage ditches with about 12,000 dams and restoring 35 km of streams to their natural courses.
Project monitoring reported water tables rising and stabilising after restoration, an estimated 170,000 m³ of additional water retained, about 125 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided per year from re-wetted peat (a self-reported estimate, not third-party verified), and over 165 hectares of black grouse habitat improved.
