Malta Life Sciences Park

Malta Life Sciences Park (MLSP), in San Ġwann, was conceived by Malta Enterprise — Malta's national economic development agency — to give life-sciences and information-technology companies a state-of-the-art site alongside the country's main research and clinical institutions.

The park's BioMalta campus provides 13,500 m² of laboratories, offices, seminar and meeting space across four buildings, including 61 lab units of which 11 are dedicated incubation units. It is designed to let companies commercialise research with minimal set-up time and to leverage direct proximity to the University of Malta, Mater Dei Hospital and Malta's specialised Oncology Hospital, as well as private-sector partners.

The project targeted the creation of more than 500 jobs by 2019. Confirmed tenants include backup-software company Altaro, global pharmaceutical firm Alvogen, and diagnostics/lab-services firms BioDNA Laboratory Services and Bioscint Engineering, among others listed on the park's current tenant directory.

MLSP is a good practice for showing how a small state can build a dedicated, government-run life-sciences knowledge-transfer site linking its sole national university and main hospitals with industry. The main caution is that the original 500-jobs-by-2019 target is a forward projection from the park's launch, not a verified outcome; no source reviewed here confirms whether it was met, and no independent count of total current jobs or spin-out companies from University of Malta/Mater Dei research was found.
