Mitacs — Canada's National Research-Internship Knowledge-Transfer Network

Mitacs was founded in 1999 by mathematicians Steve Halperin, Luc Vinet, Don Dawson and Nassif Ghoussoub as a federally funded Network of Centres of Excellence based in British Columbia, originally focused on mathematics of information technology and complex systems. It has since grown into Canada's national mechanism for funding graduate and postdoctoral research internships that place students inside industry, non-profit and government partner organizations, headquartered in Vancouver and now partnering with all 198 Canadian post-secondary institutions across every province and the Yukon.
In its 2024-25 annual report to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), Mitacs disclosed $292.7 million invested across 7,202 research projects, representing 20,885 student internships with 3,284 partner organizations (43% new to the program that year), leveraging over $166 million in federal funds into more than $345 million of total R&D investment. Its Indigenous Pathways internship stream grew 56% year-on-year to 747 internship units across nine provinces.
A formal ISED evaluation covering April 2012 to March 2016 found the program well-aligned with federal innovation priorities and beneficial to intern employment and graduate retention, and supported a subsequent roughly four-fold funding increase (Budget 2017 committed $221 million over five years). The same evaluation was candid about a limitation: it noted Mitacs 'lacks a way to measure the program's overall contribution to academia-industry collaboration' at the national level, and recommended an external capacity review given the scale of the planned funding increase — a caution worth carrying alongside the program's headline growth figures.
