Mauritius Telecom and the Ministry of Education piloted mytGPT, an AI tutoring assistant, with about 70 Grade 12 students in Rodrigues from Aug-Oct 2025, expanding to 8 primary and secondary schools by January 2026; no learning-outcome data has yet been published.
mytGPT is a generative-AI pedagogical assistant developed by Mauritius Telecom's in-house innovation team, in partnership with Mauritius's Ministry of Education and Human Resources. It is described as providing on-demand, level-tailored content and personal-tutor-style support to students, together with a real-time dashboard letting teachers monitor class progress; no source discloses the underlying AI model or vendor.
The platform launched in June 2025 with a pilot at College Marechal on the island of Rodrigues — Mauritius's most remote, least-connected inhabited island — involving about 70 Grade 12 students across mathematics, accounting and physics from August to October 2025. Following a partnership agreement signed in October 2025, an expanded pilot launched on 26 January 2026 across eight schools (four primary and four secondary, including James Burty David State Secondary School, Ebene SSS Girls, Vacoas SSS Boys, and France Boyer de la Giroday SSS), covering grades 4, 7, 8 and 9. Officials describe an ambition for nationwide rollout from grade 3 through secondary school starting in 2027.
No learning-outcome data (test scores, engagement metrics, or comparable measures) has been published for either pilot phase — coverage to date describes rollout process and intentions rather than results. All published figures trace back to Mauritius Telecom's own press releases, even though several independent news outlets (Ecofin Agency, CIO Africa, TechAfrica News, La Gazette) have each covered the rollout on their own domains. Coverage also notes an explicit equity concern: having begun in Rodrigues, the risk is that further expansion may favour better-connected schools over remote ones, and no funding figures or technical specification of the AI model have been disclosed.
