France's NOLEJ, founded in Tourcoing in 2020, uses generative AI to turn any document into interactive quizzes, videos and activities for teachers; ranked 44th globally (1st French) in TIME's 2024 Best EdTech list with 170,000+ users.
FRENOLEJ (legally NEURONYS SAS) was founded in Tourcoing, in France's Hauts-de-France region, in 2020 by AI engineer Philippe Decottignies and cognitive-psychology teacher-educator Nejma Belkhdim.
The platform's generative AI aims to convert static documents -- text, audio or video -- into roughly ten interactive learning activities (quizzes, gap-fill exercises, crosswords, explainer videos) in H5P format, with the teacher reviewing and correcting every AI-generated output before use.
NOLEJ has run pilots with the University of Lausanne and postal operator La Poste, is registered with GAR (France's national schools resource-access manager, which requires compliance with the country's data-governance rules), and was showcased at France's 2026 AI Summit. It is expanding language support toward 33+ languages, including Arabic, Russian and Turkish.
TIME Magazine's 2024 Best EdTech ranking placed NOLEJ 44th worldwide and first among French edtech companies, and the company reports more than 170,000 users. NOLEJ raised a EUR 3 million seed round in 2023 from investors including Educapital, received the European Commission's Seal of Excellence via the EIC Accelerator, and received over EUR 500,000 in FEDER (EU regional development) funding in June 2025 to align its content generation with national curricula.
No independent, peer-reviewed evaluation of learning outcomes was found; the 170,000-user figure and TIME ranking are adoption and recognition metrics rather than measured pedagogical impact, and the named institutional pilots (Lausanne, La Poste) are described without published results.
