Context

In September 2024 Italy's Ministry of Education launched a pilot introducing AI virtual assistants into 15 schools across Calabria, Lazio, Lombardia and Tuscany, comparing INVALSI standardised test results between AI-assisted and traditional control classes. Building on the pilot and input from Italy's data-protection authority, the Ministry issued national guidelines for AI in schools (Ministerial Decree No. 166, 9 August 2025) covering ethical, technical and regulatory principles for schools, teachers, students and families.

Activities

More than 5,760 teacher-training courses on classroom AI use were delivered nationwide using PNRR (EU recovery-plan) funding, alongside development and eventual national issuance of the AI-in-schools guidelines.

Conclusions

The guidelines are non-binding recommendations rather than enforceable law, and the ministry has not published disaggregated INVALSI results comparing pilot and control classes, so the evidence base remains process-level rather than a peer-reviewed learning-outcome study.
