Context

The Pastoral Nomads take Climate Action project, led by the Mongolian Society for Range Management (MSRM) in partnership with the University of Leicester, supports three herder groups - Hongor Ovoo heseg, Ikh Am heseg, and Dulaan Khairkhan - across steppe grassland in Arkhangai, Bayankhonkhor, and Tuv Aimags, central Mongolia.

Activities

Herder households commit to rotational grazing schedules, tree-planting, and wildlife protection in exchange for direct PES payments drawn from carbon credit revenue. Site visits occur three to four times per year. Credits are sold internationally via brokers including myclimate (Switzerland).

Results

Annual sequestration runs at approximately 24,000 tCO2, with 24,850 tCO2 independently verified under the Plan Vivo standard in 2023. The first independent third-party verification was completed in 2022. Livelihood co-benefits include felt production cooperatives and two 'VIVO' trade centres established from credit revenues.

Conclusions

The project is aligned with Mongolia's Nationally Determined Contribution and supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
