Context

A study, taking the existing literature as a starting point, highlighting factors that explain the low presence of women in political parties — especially in leadership structures and power networks, on electoral lists, and in institutions of political representation at local, national and European levels.

Conclusions

The study finds that women in Romania continue to face difficulties taking part in electoral competition and even greater difficulties actually occupying eligible positions; that, for the first time since Romania's EU accession, there has been a decrease in the political representation of women at both national and European levels; and that the organisational culture of political parties continues to be heavily influenced by patriarchal values regarding gender roles.
