Context

Facing a severe teacher shortage and learning gaps linked to wartime disruption, Israel's Ministry of Education launched 'Project 720' — named for its aim of surrounding both students and staff with support '360 degrees around the student, 360 degrees around the teaching staff.' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Education Minister Yoav Kisch unveiled the programme during a visit to Dekel Vilnai Middle School in Ma'ale Adumim in June 2026.

Activities

The pilot placed AI-personalised English-language instruction in 28 middle schools for the 2025-26 school year, evaluated by the Ministry using pedagogical, emotional and organisational indicators including student motivation and independence and teachers' ability to deliver individualised support. A parallel track, 'English for Everyone', is intended to bring AI-assisted English instruction to all middle schools.

Results

Netanyahu, Kisch and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced a national AI-in-education budget exceeding NIS 1 billion (roughly $270 million), covering this pilot and a wider summer AI-learning initiative aimed at closing wartime learning gaps ahead of matriculation exams. For the 2026-27 school year, the Ministry planned to expand Project 720 from 28 to 180 schools and extend it beyond English into mathematics and science.
