Recovery Rises was a Liverpool-based project led by Genie in the Gutter, a nonprofit organisation offering opportunities and training to active substance misusers as a bridge to recovery. It combined a 12-week digital media course with an evidence-based online recovery learning programme provided by partner organisation Breaking Free Online.
Tutors and mentors on the programme were themselves ex-substance misusers, giving them credibility as strong role models for the learners.
The project reported a powerful impact on its 180 learners, who all reduced their substance misuse, with some going into full recovery. Learners accessed online recovery communities, became less socially isolated, and were able to take part in further activities and meetings supporting their recovery. In terms of digital inclusion, learners acquired digital media skills including journalism, writing and digital photography which, combined with increased confidence and self-esteem, improved their employability.
