Description

Before this registry, it was practically impossible to learn which AI tools Slovenian public bodies used, how they worked or what they were for. The civil-society organisation Danes je nov dan, an EDRi affiliate, launched the Public Sector AI Registry (Register rabe UI) in October 2024 as the first centralised source of information on public-sector algorithms in Slovenia.
It is built from publicly available sources, direct requests to institutions and verified contributions from the public. By October 2025 it listed nine systems, showing for each how it is used, who developed it, what it cost and whether safeguards such as human-rights or data-protection impact assessments were carried out. The organisation estimates that several dozen more systems are in use but undocumented.
Limits are stated openly. EDRi reports that the limited responses from institutions highlight a lack of attention to AI in the public sector, and the registry cannot replace systemic regulation. The Ministry of Digital Transformation has publicly committed to an official registry in amendments to the national law implementing the EU AI Act, but no launch date is given; the NGO says it will keep applying pressure. No outcome evaluation of the registry's effect on public-sector practice has been published.
The model is transferable to any country without a public AI inventory: low cost, open to contributions, and usable by journalists and civil society.
