Saro — Romania's AI Motivational Companion Tackles School Dropout and Teacher Admin Burden

Digital Nation, a Romanian technology nonprofit, built Saro to address a cluster of problems Romanian schools report simultaneously: dropout risk, heavy administrative load on teachers, declining student motivation and a lack of personalised support at scale. Saro is a generative-AI companion for students in grades 5 through 12 that reaches them by voice message and in-app content, tracks engagement with learning platforms and gradebooks through more than 20 specialised AI models, and is designed to nudge students on assignments and check in on motivation rather than simply answer questions.

The project combined an initial $150,000 of Digital Nation's own investment with a $700,000 grant from Google.org, and was piloted through Romania's Generatia Tech programme with roughly 1,900 participants before a partnership with the Ministry of Education and Research to expand into schools and universities nationally. Reported pilot results vary by source: Romania Insider put the completion-rate gain at 28% more assignments finished versus non-users, while Outsourcing Today reported a 41% increase in homework completion against a traditional email/SMS comparison group, alongside an 89% rise in extracurricular event attendance and close to 20,000 exchanged messages.

Both figures come from an uncontrolled pilot rather than a randomized evaluation, and neither published account details a data-protection framework for the continuous interaction-monitoring the system performs - worth flagging given Saro's scope covers minors as young as grade 5.
