SEWA, founded in Ahmedabad in 1972, is the world's largest trade union of informal-sector women. With 3.7 million members across 20 Indian states, it integrates organising with microfinance, insurance and training, raising member incomes and reducing domestic violence.
Founded in 1972 by Ela Bhatt in Ahmedabad, SEWA is the world's largest trade union of informal-sector women workers, organising street vendors, home-based workers and agricultural labourers. Its 'Full Employment' model links organising with SEWA Bank (microfinance, est. 1974), VimoSEWA (insurance), trade cooperatives and the SEWA Academy (training).
As of 2022, SEWA has over 3.7 million members across 20 states. Documented outcomes include member incomes rising from Rs5,000 to Rs15,000/month by sector, reduced household debt vulnerability, increased productive-asset ownership and reduced domestic violence. A 2007 Karmika School survey found 68% of graduates reported greater confidence and family status, and SEWA Bharat's enterprise programme achieved 3x average revenue growth affecting 165,000 women.
SEWA is deeply embedded in Gujarat's informal-economy context and Indian cooperative law, making wholesale replication complex, though its organising-plus-services principles have inspired similar organisations globally; it received the Right Livelihood Award in 1984 and informed India's Unorganised Workers' Social Security Act 2008.
