Context

Northern Trains, run by the UK Department for Transport's Operator of Last Resort since March 2020, began trialling AI-generated British Sign Language announcements on 16 February 2024 with partners InfoTec and Signapse. BSL interpreters are filmed signing individual words and station names; Signapse's AI knits these clips into full sentences on onboard information screens.

Results

The initial trial covered three routes and translated station-name announcements only. South Western Railway, also brought into public ownership (25 May 2025), has since integrated Signapse into its 'One Scan' digital information portal and digital totems at London Waterloo -- described as a UK first -- winning the Accessibility and Integrated Transport category at the 2026 Rail Business Awards. Roughly 22,000 people in the UK use BSL as their primary language (2021 Census).

Conclusions

No independent, quantified data on translation accuracy, comprehension or passenger satisfaction has been published by either operator; Northern's stated goal of a national fleet-wide rollout has not been independently confirmed as complete.
