Description

On 5 September 2025, at UNESCO's Digital Learning Week in Paris, Slovakia's Minister of Education Tomáš Drucker announced the 'Plan of Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education 2025–2027' — a response to a gap the ministry had itself identified: national surveys cited by the ministry found that a large majority of Slovak pupils (reported at 70–80% across different releases) were already using AI tools for schoolwork, while only around a quarter of teachers had brought AI into their lessons, leaving guidance and safeguards lagging behind actual use.

The plan rests on four principles — accessibility, equality, quality and safety — delivered through five initiatives: classroom AI instruction, equal access to AI tools, teacher support to reduce administrative workload, modernised education-data governance, and support for AI research and tool development. A national framework of AI competencies for teaching and professional staff has already been published, and around 100 schools took part in mandatory 'AI Days' between October and November 2025 to trial classroom use and surface risks. AI literacy becomes part of the compulsory state curriculum from the 2026/27 school year, with dedicated AI Competence Centres planned at public higher-education institutions between 2026 and 2029.

As of mid-2026 the plan remains in an early implementation phase: the promised methodological guidance on privacy, human oversight and safe classroom use was still being finalised, and no independent evaluation of the AI Days pilots or the competencies framework had yet been published, so the plan's real-world safety and equity impact cannot yet be verified.
