Context
Vanuatu's Office of the Government CIO partnered with the ITU, Australia's infrastructure department, the Asian Development Bank and the Joint SDG Fund to pilot a 'Smart Island' model in six villages of Southern Malekula, installing VSAT/solar connectivity and running digital-literacy, business, cybersecurity and e-commerce training.
Results
From December 2020 to October 2024, the programme trained over 1,000 community members and restored internet access that let a local secondary school resume online study; construction of a permanent Digital Hub business centre began in October 2024.
