STEMGuyana's IDB Lab-funded AI tutor, built into its Pathway Online Academy, delivers curriculum-aligned lessons to Grades 1-10 across Guyana's ten regions. Independent reporting cites preliminary gains over 30% for advanced learners, with a full study due in early 2026.
STEMGuyana, a Georgetown-based nonprofit, has integrated an AI tutor into its Pathway Online Academy after-school programme, which combines the AI tool with in-person community-mentor 'Learning Pods.' The programme targets learning gaps across all ten of Guyana's regions, including sparsely populated hinterland areas with limited connectivity, and is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank's IDB Lab.
Deliver curriculum-aligned personalised learning for Grades 1-10, expand educational access to remote and hinterland regions, and supplement community mentor involvement in Learning Pods.
The AI tutor reads lessons aloud, surfaces tutorial videos, gives real-time feedback on student questions, and auto-corrects quizzes with grade-appropriate explanations across Mathematics, English, Science, Social Studies and CSEC exam preparation, aligned with the Ministry of Education curriculum. The programme piloted with six learner groups in mid-2024 before a nationwide rollout later that year, and STEMGuyana has trained hundreds of community mentors to support in-person Learning Pods.
Preliminary findings reported in October 2025 showed more than 30% improvement in assessment scores for more advanced learners, with the organisation noting that 'the biggest improvements come when an adult is engaged.'
Full, independent study findings were expected in Q1 2026; available results are preliminary, self-reported by the implementing organisation, and not benchmarked against a control group.
