Since 1993, Technopark Zürich has anchored ETH Zurich's spin-off pipeline: of 530 spin-offs since 1973, 519 remain active, 93% survive 5 years, and CHF 425m landed in 2024 alone — though only ~8% of founders are women.
CH04Technopark Zurich opened in March 1993 in Zurich's former industrial Kreis 5 district, giving ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich a shared non-academic address for spin-off companies to rent space, hire staff and access coaching alongside 250+ other resident firms.
Of the 530 spin-offs ETH Zurich has produced since 1973, 519 are still trading and 95% remain headquartered in Switzerland. A University of St.Gallen survey of 145 of them found around 4,500 FTE jobs created, 93% five-year survival, and combined equity value of roughly CHF 5 billion for the surveyed group. Annual investment reached CHF 425 million into ETH spin-offs in 2024 across 42 disclosed rounds.
The 2018 survey found only around 8% of spin-off founders were women, and no source reviewed measures how much of the model depends on ETH's unusually large research budget and Zurich's dense finance/industry cluster -- both limiting how confidently the model transfers elsewhere.
