Description

Technopark Zürich opened in March 1993 in the city's former industrial Kreis 5 district, giving ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich a shared, non-academic address where spin-off companies could rent space, hire staff and access coaching alongside more than 250 other resident firms. ETH was among the first tenants, occupying roughly one-sixth of the original site.
The results compound over decades rather than years. Of the 530 spin-offs ETH Zurich has produced since 1973, 519 are still trading, 95% remain headquartered in Switzerland, and a University of St.Gallen survey of 145 of them found they had created around 4,500 full-time-equivalent jobs, with the electronics sector alone contributing over 2,000 FTEs. The same survey put five-year survival at 93% — far above typical startup failure rates — and estimated combined equity value at roughly CHF 5 billion for the surveyed group, extrapolated to about CHF 10 billion across the full population. Annual investment has kept climbing: CHF 425 million flowed into ETH spin-offs in 2024 across 42 disclosed rounds, a figure ETH and independent observers both describe as unmatched by any other European university.
The record has a clear gap: the 2018 survey found only around 8% of spin-off founders were women, and none of the sources reviewed report a systematic effort to close that gap or to measure how much of the model depends on ETH's unusually large research budget and Zurich's dense finance/industry cluster — both of which limit how confidently the model transfers to smaller or less-resourced ecosystems.
