Since a 2010 decree, Institut Teknologi Bandung's LPIK has run an integrated tech-transfer office, incubator, science park and commercialisation firm that helped launch 95 spin-offs by 2019 — later studied as a national model in a 2024 peer-reviewed paper.
The Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (Lembaga Pengembangan Inovasi dan Kewirausahaan, LPIK) was formally established at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) by a Rector's Decree in March 2010, reporting to the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation. It brought together four previously separate functions — entrepreneurship development, a business incubator, a technology transfer office, and a science and innovation park — under one roof, aiming to move research results from ITB's laboratories into the market faster than the ad-hoc arrangements that preceded it.
According to LPIK's own account, the office helped launch 95 'quality businesses' in the ITB environment between 2010 and 2019, spanning ICT, digital services, creative industries, health, food, life sciences, energy and the environment. Named examples include the KAZEE Intelligence platform and the Karla Bionics prosthetic-arm venture, both licensed out of university-held patents.
A 2024 peer-reviewed study by Dzakiy, Matsuura, Simatupang and Prasetio in the Journal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market, and Complexity used ITB as its case study and found that Indonesian universities' commercialisation models — including the one in use at ITB — often import frameworks built for developed-country contexts and do not fully accommodate the interests of labs, industry partners and intermediaries. The paper proposes a revised model built around four intermediary types (technology transfer office, incubator, science/technopark, and a dedicated commercialisation company), suggesting LPIK's own structure is a reference point but still a work in progress rather than a finished template.
