The Gender Gap in Financing

This study analyses the gender financing gap for entrepreneurs in Greece and worldwide, examining its causes and proposing recommendations and good practices for closing it. It identifies factors such as low participation of women in entrepreneurship, information shortages, funder biases, and low numbers of female investors as drivers of the gap, and links increased representation of women entrepreneurs to practices such as gender-disaggregated data collection, structured application procedures, concrete assessment criteria, equal representation of women in assessment processes, and funder attention to social impact.

In Greece, 62% of women start their businesses using their own funds and use lending at a much lower rate than men. Greek start-ups with at least one woman on their founding team received only 6% of the total $6.125 billion in funding directed into the Greek start-up ecosystem.
