On 29 August 2025, Turkmenistan's Ministry of Education partnered with the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE) to hold the country's first International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education in Ashgabat, titled 'The Potential of Artificial Intelligence for Achieving Sustainable Development Goal for Education.'
The hybrid-format event was opened by UNESCO IITE director Tao Zhan, UNESCO Education Sector's Shafika Isaacs, and Turkmenistan's Vice Minister of Education Azat Atayev, with keynotes from Beijing Normal University's Huang Ronghuai and UNESCO ICHEI's Bi Xiaohan; scientists and educators from Turkmen State University, the International Oil and Gas University and other countries attended, discussing personalising learning, fostering critical thinking, and adapting curricula to AI.
No participant counts, national policy commitments, funding, or follow-up implementation plan are documented: this is an agenda-setting and awareness event, not yet a delivered programme. A second, separate Ashgabat conference in December 2025 highlighted a newly opened AI laboratory at Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University, an early sign the August conference's agenda is translating into concrete campus infrastructure.
