UCC's semiconductor/photonics research institute runs a technology-transfer pipeline that spun out InfiniLED (acquired by Facebook/Oculus, 2016) and Vivid Photonics (2025), with a 2026 government-backed plan to fund 10 more spin-outs and double its Cork footprint by 2030.
Tyndall National Institute is University College Cork's flagship ICT and photonics research institute, created in 2004 from the National Microelectronics Research Centre (founded 1981/82) together with UCC academic departments and Cork IT research groups, under a dedicated Government-UCC agreement. It employs over 600 researchers and engineers plus 120-150 postgraduate students from 52 nationalities.
Tyndall's 2023 Annual Report reported EUR 47 million in newly approved research proposal funding (52 proposals, up from EUR 26 million/39 proposals the prior year), EUR 8 million in direct industry income (16% of total institute income), and participation in 41 EU-funded projects worth a combined EUR 467 million, of which over EUR 10 million flowed to Ireland-based industry partners. Tyndall has participated in over 111 Horizon 2020 projects worth roughly EUR 800 million, around 10% of Ireland's total Horizon 2020 drawdown.
Concrete technology-transfer outcomes include InfiniLED, a 2010 Tyndall/UCC spin-out that licensed patented micro-LED display technology and was acquired by Facebook's Oculus in October 2016 in a deal reported at over EUR 20 million, and Vivid Photonics, a 2025 UCC/Tyndall spin-out - founded by the same researcher, Brian Corbett - that launched a superluminescent diode light source for AR/VR glasses at Photonics West in San Francisco.
In April 2026 the Irish Government announced EUR 100 million to double Tyndall's Cork footprint over three years, targeting 10 new spin-outs and growth to 750+ staff and over EUR 80 million in annual income by 2030 - forward-looking targets, not yet achieved results. Reported figures for on-site 'industry researchers-in-residence' vary between Tyndall's own web pages (70 vs. over 100), and no comprehensive cumulative patent or spin-out count was found in public sources.
