First nationwide compulsory AI curriculum: UAE MoE mandated AI as a standalone subject in all public schools K-12 from Sept 2025. ~1 M students, 1,000+ specialist AI teachers trained, 7-domain syllabus covering ethics to real-world application.
In May 2025, under the UAE's AI Strategy 2031, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that Artificial Intelligence and Technology would become a mandatory standalone subject in every public school across the UAE, from kindergarten to Grade 12, marking the first global implementation of a nationwide compulsory AI curriculum at this scale.
The subject, formally named 'Artificial Intelligence and Technology' and replacing the previous 'Computing, Creative Design and Innovation', is intended to build AI literacy across seven domains: foundational AI concepts, data and algorithms, software applications, ethical awareness, real-world applications, innovation and project design, and policy and community engagement.
Teaching intensity scales with age: first-cycle pupils (ages 6–10) and second-cycle pupils (ages 11–14) attend dedicated AI classes every two weeks, while third-cycle students (ages 14–18) attend weekly sessions. The UAE Ministry of Education recruited and trained over 1,000 specialist AI teachers through intensive summer programmes before the 2025–2026 school year began.
Approximately one million public school students are enrolled in the new curriculum, covering children whose families rely on government-funded education.
The curriculum is too new for published learning-outcome data. The UAE's centralised, top-down governance model limits independent curriculum review, so whether implementation achieves genuine critical AI literacy — beyond the welcomed 'ethical awareness' domain — cannot yet be assessed from available evidence.
