UNESCO & KIX Africa 21 -- National AI Competency Frameworks for Teachers in Francophone Africa

On 17 October 2025, UNESCO and the KIX Africa 21 Hub -- an initiative strengthening education systems across the Global South -- launched a programme to build national AI competency frameworks and translate digital learning resources into local languages across four pilot countries: Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Burundi and Senegal.

The first concrete step took place in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, where a workshop held 15-17 September 2025 gathered more than 40 participants from Côte d'Ivoire and a delegation from Benin to begin developing an AI competency framework for teachers, administrators and learners, building on Côte d'Ivoire's National Digital Education Policy (2024-2030) and National Strategy for the Digitalisation of Education (2024-2028). Benin's Ministry of Early Childhood and Primary Education has separately committed to developing an aligned national AI and digital competency framework under its National Strategy for AI and Big Data.

In parallel, the programme translates digital learning resources into national and local languages, drawing on the Global Digital Library and UNESCO's Translate a Story initiative, supported by Norad and Sopra Steria, to expand access to mother-tongue content -- UNESCO notes that 8 in 10 children in Africa start school in a language different from the one spoken at home.

As of the programme's launch, UNESCO and Ecofin Agency reporting documents the workshop, participant counts and policy commitments, but the initiative is explicitly framed as "pioneering work in progress": no completion dates, teacher-reach figures, or evaluation/impact data have yet been published for any of the four countries.
