Vodafone Ghana launched SuperCare in 2017 as a dedicated support channel for customers who are deaf or hard of hearing. Dialling *494# connects users to specially trained customer-service agents and, via video call, to professional sign-language interpreters, alongside discounted data and SMS bundles (from GHS 2.50) and the option to buy Vodafone Cash bundles through the same channel.
According to Vodafone Ghana and reporting in the Ghanaian Times (October 2023) and GSMA's Mobile for Development programme, the service grew from roughly 1,000 users at its 2017 launch to more than 3,000 subscribers by September 2023. Documented examples include a deaf customer who received sign-language support during a medical video consultation, and a deaf Vodafone Cash agent in Accra who used SuperCare to grow her business.
The figures are self-reported by Vodafone and its telecom-industry association (GSMA); no independent audit of usage or outcomes was found. Ghana's population includes an estimated 1.7% living with disabling hearing loss (WHO), so SuperCare's reported subscriber base still represents a small share of potential users.
