Context

Under Circular 9618 of 7 November 2025, the Federation Wallonie-Bruxelles (Belgium's French-speaking education authority) launched a call for projects inviting primary schools to experiment with AI-based adaptive learning software in grades 4 to 6. Twenty schools were selected from applicants assessed on stakeholder involvement, alignment with digital strategy, diversity of intended uses, and training of project leads.

Results

The programme is built around three pedagogical uses -- remediation, consolidation and extension -- applied to reading, writing and basic mathematics, using named eligible platforms (Lalilo, Adaptiv'Math, Matheros, Projet Voltaire), deliberately excluding general-purpose chatbots such as ChatGPT. A total budget of EUR200,000 was allocated, with up to EUR10,000 per school, on the explicit condition that software 'support the teaching team without replacing it.'

Conclusions

The experimentation runs until 9 October 2026, after which each school must submit a report feeding a central evaluation. Belgian regional press reporting on the launch noted that, at the pilot's start, it remained unclear which success indicators would be used to judge the trial or what would happen to the learning data collected from participating pupils.
