Recognised in 1988 as China's first state-level high-tech zone, Zhongguancun in Beijing grew from a district electronics market into a technology-transfer hub credited with spinning out Lenovo and Founder Group, now hosting over 20,000 high-tech firms.
Zhongguancun's origins trace to the early 1980s, when Chinese Academy of Sciences member Chen Chunxian, after visiting Boston and Silicon Valley, envisioned a similar district in Beijing's Haidian area; the resulting cluster of information-technology markets earned the nickname 'Electronics Avenue'. In 1988, China's central government formally recognised it as the 'Beijing High-Technology Industry Development Experimental Zone' — the country's first state-level high-tech zone. In 1999 it was reorganised as the 'Zhongguancun Science & Technology Zone', expanding to seven parks across Beijing (Haidian, Fengtai, Changping, Electronics City/Chaoyang, Yizhuang, Desheng and Jianxiang).
The zone is directly credited with incubating some of China's most significant technology companies: Stone Group (1984, described as the first successful private technology company operating outside direct government control), Founder Group (spun off from Peking University), and Lenovo Group (spun off from the Chinese Academy of Sciences), which went on to acquire IBM's personal-computer division for $1.75 billion in 2005, becoming the world's third-largest PC maker. Multinational R&D centres from Motorola, Microsoft and IBM also located within the zone.
Scale: per the 2004 Beijing Statistical Yearbook, the zone's seven parks already hosted over 12,000 high-tech enterprises employing 489,000 technicians. An independent industry analysis reports that the zone — now expanded to 16 sub-parks across Beijing — is home to over 20,000 high-tech enterprises, with hi-tech industries located there posting over 25% annual growth in the past decade and contributing more than 60% of Beijing's industrial economic growth 'for many years running'.
One illustrative, officially reported recent data point: Zhongguancun Shijingshan Park, a constituent park focused on the metaverse, sci-fi industry, industrial internet and AI, saw its annual revenue grow from CNY 4 billion in 2006 to CNY 396 billion in 2022 — a compound annual growth rate the Beijing municipal government itself states as 'more than 31 percent' — reaching CNY 201.2 billion in the first half of 2023 alone, with a 2025 projection of CNY 470 billion. This figure describes one constituent sub-park, not the zone as a whole, and no single independently audited figure exists for the entire multi-decade, 16-park zone's aggregate current revenue or technology-transfer transaction value.
