Basel's university-adjacent biotech incubator — 68 startups since 2011, 1,000+ jobs (620 on-site, 466 alumni), CHF 3 billion+ capital raised, 5 exits including a CHF 1 billion+ acquisition, per the 2024 BAK Economics/EvalueScience independent impact study.
Tech Park Basel is a life sciences startup incubator established in 2011 in the city of Basel, co-located with the University of Basel, University Hospital Basel, and within the orbit of Novartis and Roche's global R&D headquarters. It operates across 6,700 m² of purpose-built laboratory and office space.
A 2024 independent impact assessment by BAK Economics AG and EvalueScience AG, commissioned by SwissParks and published in August 2024, provides the most rigorous external evaluation:
- 68 startups supported since founding (survey covers 65 companies)
- Over 1,000 total jobs created: 620 direct on-site employees plus 466 additional jobs generated by alumni companies operating elsewhere in the Basel region
- More than CHF 3 billion in private capital raised across the portfolio
- 5 corporate exits, including NBE Therapeutics' acquisition by Boehringer Ingelheim for over CHF 1 billion, and Monterosa Therapeutics' IPO
- 86% of portfolio companies hold patents or licenses, averaging 8.5 IP assets per firm
- In 2021 alone, tenants raised CHF 587 million in financing rounds, grants and awards
- 85% of companies operate in Life Sciences; 30% are direct university spin-offs; 15% originated from Novartis or Roche R&D divisions
As of end 2024, the park hosts 26 active companies (17 direct tenants, 9 service-agreement users) from over 45 nations, achieving 94% occupancy in 2023 and 86.5% average in 2024. Staff grew from 31 to 365 employees over the park's first decade.
The park's model — concentrating pharma-incumbent R&D spin-outs alongside academic entrepreneurship in a single dense cluster — creates a self-reinforcing pipeline from laboratory to commercial exit, independently validated by BAK Economics.
