Evidence snapshot for Azraq
Azraq is home to three documented initiatives. WFP's Building Blocks blockchain cash-assistance system has operated in Azraq camp since 2017, scaling to serve Syrian refugees alongside other camps, and by 2025 had transferred $760 million across over 40 million transactions to around six million people globally. EduApp4Syria's mobile literacy games were piloted with roughly 300 refugee children aged 5–10 in Azraq camp in 2018, producing large gains in foundational decoding (81% improvement in rare-word decoding versus -11% for controls) over a 27-hour play period, though the quasi-experimental design limits generalisability. The Azraq Oasis Restoration has worked since 1994 to rewet Jordan's only wetland reserve after over-extraction dried it in 1992; a 2020 rehabilitation reallocated about 500,000 m³ of water annually and reintroduced 650 endemic killifish, though only approximately 10% of the historic oasis extent has been revived.
