Evidence snapshot for Kathmandu

Kathmandu Living Labs — Open Cities Mapping for Seismic Resilience shows that before 2012, Kathmandu Valley lacked a reliable digital map of its critical infrastructure. A crowdsourced mapping initiative digitised 126,105 building footprints, 3,716 km of road network, and structurally surveyed 2,256 schools and 350 health facilities, with over 1,500 trained volunteers participating. When a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck on 25 April 2015, this open map enabled rapid damage assessment and emergency response by the Nepal Army, Nepal Red Cross and international relief agencies. Since then, Kathmandu Living Labs has expanded to run 30+ projects, engage over 5,000 people and partner with 40+ organisations.
