Kathmandu Living Labs digitised critical urban infrastructure in Kathmandu Valley before the 2015 earthquake, mapping 126,105 buildings, 3,716 km of roads, 2,256 schools and 350 health facilities through a crowdsourced effort involving 1,500+ trained volunteers. When the magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck on 25 April 2015, this open map was rapidly updated with damage and road-passability data that Nepal Army, Nepal Red Cross and international relief agencies used for emergency response. The project later contributed to Nepal's Rural Housing Reconstruction Programme and spawned an independent organisation (Kathmandu Living Labs) that has since run 30+ projects, engaged 5,000+ people and held 200+ events across 40+ partner organisations.
