Context

Mongolia's National Statistical Office (NSO) began publishing its integrated statistical database online at www.1212.mn as part of a national open-data initiative, later adding a dedicated open-data API (opendata.1212.mn) built on the international PxWeb standard used by many national statistics offices.

Objectives

The initiative aimed to make Mongolia's official statistics openly available and machine-readable, and, from 2025, to give researchers a secure environment for analysing underlying microdata via a new Statistical Data Lab.

Activities

The NSO published data online, added an open API on the PxWeb standard, and in 2025 launched the Statistical Data Lab. Independent assessment by Open Data Watch's Open Data Inventory (ODIN) has benchmarked the coverage and openness of Mongolia's statistics office across three assessment rounds since 2018.

Results

Mongolia scored 78/100 overall in the 2020 ODIN round (data coverage 64/100, data openness 91/100), ranking 9th of 187 countries and 1st in East Asia, up from 11th place in the 2018 round. By the 2022 round, Mongolia's score had risen further to 82/100, ranking 8th of 195 countries assessed.

Conclusions

ODIN measures the availability and machine-readability of official statistics, not downstream usage or policy impact, so this ranking is strong third-party evidence of data-supply quality rather than proof that businesses, researchers or citizens are using the data to change outcomes.
