AI and Education – Challenges and Perspectives: Regional Teacher Conference in Sarajevo

The Catholic School Centre 'Saint Joseph' in Sarajevo hosted the regional conference 'AI and Education – Challenges and Perspectives' from 7 to 10 May 2026, bringing together more than 80 teachers and education practitioners from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia. The event was supported by UNESCO, UNICEF, the French Institute and the Croatian Cultural Society 'Napredak'.

Sessions combined plenary discussion on the opportunities and risks of AI adoption in schools — including data protection, safeguarding learner wellbeing and preserving academic integrity — with hands-on workshops in which teachers tested AI tools for lesson preparation and classroom use under guided, ethics-first framing. A stated outcome of the conference was the launch of UNESCO's global AI-in-education guidance, newly translated into Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and Montenegrin to widen regional access.

As a single four-day convening rather than a sustained programme, the conference produced no measurable learning-outcome data and its reach is currently limited to the participating cohort; its value lies in modelling a human-centred, ethics-first approach to introducing AI into teaching practice across the Western Balkans, and in the reusable multilingual resources it produced.
