Context

Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) held its first certification ceremony for its 'Certificate in AI for Educators' short course on 29 May 2026: 78 graduands attended in person, alongside a cross-border digital class of more than 110 educators studying from Rwanda, Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania and the United Kingdom. Delivered online via ZOU's short-course platform, the course is positioned as the primary vehicle for operationalising Pillar 6 (Capacity Building and Education) of Zimbabwe's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (ZNAIS 2026-2030).

Objectives

To take veteran teachers from basic digital literacy (hardware use, spreadsheets) through to AI-assisted lesson design, automated grading and reporting, and instant generation of visual teaching aids, framed around the Ubuntu/Unhu ethic of technology in service of community rather than replacement of teachers.

Activities

Grassroots uptake was illustrated by graduand Gift Dumbarumwe, a Manicaland school head, who personally recruited 65 face-to-face participants for the province's first cohort after describing how manual lesson planning and record-keeping had consumed entire school holidays.

Results

78 graduands were certified in the first in-country cohort, plus a cross-border digital cohort of 110+ educators from five other African countries and the UK. Government ministries have since directed wider enrolment across schools, polytechnics and municipal authorities, but that expansion has not yet been documented.

Conclusions

This is a single inaugural cohort reported by ZOU itself and by the state-owned Herald newspaper, anchored in one graduand testimonial rather than a systematic outcome study; no independent evaluation of classroom practice or student-learning effects has been published.
